Presidency calls for patience, says Babachir, Oke remain suspended

Palpable anxiety and expectations are now trailing the inability of the Acting President Yemi Osibanjo (SAN) to take key decisions on certain government activities especially the outcome of the probe panel over the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. David Babachir Lawal and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Ambassador Ayodele Oke, in the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari. The development is creating room for speculations while the fates of Lawal and Oke are now hanging in the balance. The Daily Times recalls that Buhari had suspended Lawal over his alleged involvement in the violations of law and due process in the award of contracts to companies linked to him under the Presidential Initiative on the North-East (PINE) which he headed for the clearing of ‘invasive plant species’ (weeds) in Yobe State. The President also suspended Oke over his claim that the humongous N13 billion cash recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos belonged to the NIA. Buhari later directed Osinbajo to head the probe panel on Lawal and Oke. The panel submitted its report within two weeks. But the sudden departure of Buhari to London for a medical follow-up two weeks ago has had significant impact on the implementation of the Presidential Committee report on Lawal and Oke, which was believed to have been supposedly submitted to the President on the eve of his departure. However, a presidential aide, who spoke to The Daily Times on condition of anonymity on Sunday night, disclosed that the issues arising from the 2017 Budget has overshadowed other government activities. He said: “The outcome of the report against Lawal and Oke will have to wait because the budget is the most important issue at the Villa. “Right now, Acting President Osinbajo and other technocrats are scrutinising the documents for necessary action. You will agree with me that the whole country and Nigerians are waiting for the documents. “So other issues will have to wait. But the acting president will deal with the outcome of the report at the appropriate time. He has discussed the matter with President Buhari before he travelled to London.”
