55-year-old commercial driver gets N100, 000 bail over alleged theft of N140, 000

A 55-year-old commercial driver, Mustapha Mohammed, who allegedly stole N140, 000 belonging to one Hassan Lawal, was on Friday admitted to bail in the sum of N100,000 by an Igbosere Magistrates' Court in Lagos.

The Magistrate, Mr W. B. Balogun, also ordered that Mustapha should provide two sureties in like sum, as part of the bail conditions.

He added that the sureties must show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Balogun adjourned the case to May 16, for mention.

The accused, who resides at No. 2, Idowu Tailor St., Victoria Island, Lagos is facing a charge of stealing.

Earlier the Prosecutor, Insp. Igonbo Emby, had told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence in 2015, at his residence in the Eti-Osa area of Lagos State.

He said that the complaint asked the accused to help him keep the N140, 000.

"The accused converted the money, which was kept in his custody for safe keeping, to his own use and refused to refund it to the complaint," he said.

Emby said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Seven children die after drinking dirty water in India

Seven children have been confirmed dead due to drinking of dirty water in India.

According to reports, since April 21, a total of 15 children aged between 8 and 12 years have been admitted to a nearby hospital in Jaipur city after falling ill.

Meanwhile, a probe was ordered to investigate the deaths.

``The children were brought in with similar complaints of diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration.

``Most of them went into septic shock, which can be a result of toxins or sometimes a result of bacterial infection in the body,’’ hospital superintendent Ashok Gupta, said.

Police said that preliminary investigations showed the children had fallen ill after consuming dirty water but autopsy reports have yet to reveal the exact cause.

A report released by International Charity Water Aid said India had the world's highest number of people without access to clean water at 76 million.

``These people are forced to buy water at high prices or use supplies that were unsafe for consumption,’’ the report said.

The deaths have been reported as a searing heatwave prevails over large swathes of the country and 330 million people, and over a quarter of the country's population is affected by drought.

Indian media estimate that nearly 250 people had died in the heatwave since late March, particularly in the southern and eastern regions.

Senegal President Macky Sall on Friday urged member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that had not yet signed the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with theEuropean Union (EU) to do so quickly to enable the agreement to come into force.

“I want to appeal to ECOWAS member states that have not yet signed, to do so as soon as possible to enable EU-ECOWAS EPA to come into force,” he said.

The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has described the death of Dr Nwabu Mgbemena, its former lecturer, as a great loss to the media industry.

The Head of the department, Mr Greg Ezea, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka on Thursday that the death of Mgbemena had left a big vacuum in the media that would take time to fill.

Ezea said that the former lecturer, who was also the Managing Director of NAN, was a fine journalist who adhered to the ethics of the profession.
"His death has robbed the media industry of a genius, an icon and a rare gem.
"I received the news of his death with shock and sadness,” he said.

"He is one of those that made NAN a household name in the country because of his patriotism and hard work.
"Majority of the editors in NAN today learnt much from him being a humble and focused leader,"  he said.

He urged upcoming journalists and lecturers to emulate the footsteps of Mgbemena who made honesty, dedication to duty and good professional conduct his hallmark.
"I urge upcoming journalists in the media and lecturers in the department of mass communication to emulate his nice footsteps.
"As a lecturer and a journalist, his performance was commendable, as MD of NAN, he moved the agency to the next level," he said.

The head of department urged his family members, the media industry and the country to take solace in the fact that Mgbemena led a worthy and fulfilled life as he impacted positively on many people and contributed his quota to national development.

Ezea prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest.

Seme Customs Command hands over 43.4kg of hemp, 2 suspects to NDLEA

The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Command in Lagos State, on Thursday handed over weeds suspected to be Marijuana (hemp) of 43.4kg valued at N412, 300 and two suspects to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The Customs’ Area Controller, Victor Dimka, handed over the seizure and the suspects to the agency in Seme near Badagry.

He said the seizures were made through intelligence report by the officials of the command.

``The two male suspects, who were arrested for being in possession of 40 wraps of substances suspected to be illicit drugs, concealed inside cartons of crayfish.

``They were arrested at the Elijah area of Badagry by the Border Patrol Crack Team 'A' and the operation was successfully carried out without any casualty.

``The arrest was made on April 17, and the suspects tried to bribe the officials, but were resisted.

``We are determined to maintain the synergy that exists between the customs and other security agencies at the border,’’ he said

Dimka said the suspects were also in possession of over nine SIM cards of different networks and charms.

He promised that the tempo of patrol at the country’s border with Benin Republic would be sustained.

Receiving the suspects and the exhibits, Mr Udotong Essien, NDLEA Commandant in the area, lauded customs for the successful operation.

``This will further boost the synergy between customs and NDLEA.’’

He said the agency would carry out further investigations in a bid to fish out the drug syndicate in the border area.

Osun Assembly Advocates Equity and Fairness Over LAUTECH Management

Osun State House of Assembly has frown at the management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho for not being equitable in the management of the institution.

It also directed the Management and the Governing Council to revert its decision "on the injustice" meted out to the Bursar of the institution, Mr Olagunju Adeniyi over his appointment.

Members of the Assembly who expressed their displeasure at a meeting with the management of the institution at the Assembly Complex in Osogbo on Wednesday, said the state was not being given the fair share of the benefits from the University.

The University is jointly owned and being co-funded by the Osun and Oyo states.
A statement by the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Strategy said, the Speaker,

Honourable Najeem Salaam, who led the discussions, said, in the area of construction of facilities, appointment of staff, welfare among others, Osun has always been cheated by the management,
saying, majority of the benefit are skewed in favour of  Oyo state.

According to him, most of the intervention funds, including TETFUND have been used majorly in Oyo, while the College of Medicine located in Osun was left undeveloped.

He said that since the institution is jointly owned and co-funded, there must be equity in the sharing of its benefits, saying, the Assembly would not allow the injustice to continue.

Noting that the governments of the two states have no issue with the sharing of the benefits, he observed that the civil servants in the institution have been using their discretion to cause disharmony between the two states.

He said the state Assembly would go to any length to get what is due to the state without going beyond its boundary or clash with its sister state Oyo.

On the appointment of Bursar, the speaker directed the LAUTECH management to review his case and ensure that justice is done.

The bursar, registrar and librarian of the institution have been holding the position on acting capacity since 2013 and were recently confirmed as substantive office holders with five years tenure.

When the letters were issued to the registrar and the librarian as substantive office holders to spend five year tenure starting from 2016, the bursar was isolated and reportedly had his letter back dated to 2013 to spend only more two years, a situation that attracted the rages of the Assembly.

The speaker then directed that the bursar should either be issued his own letter of five year tenure, or the appointments of other officers are back dated to 2013 to ensure justice in the matter.

He subsequently commended the management of the institution for using ingenuity to generate revenue and sustain the payment of salary of its staff when the owner states were having difficulties in paying the subvention to the institution.

Speaking, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Abiodun Adebayo who represented the Vice Chancellor said some of the decisions that have attracted the rages of the Assembly were actually taken by the Governing Council.

He said he would take the concern of the house to the management for review and necessary actions.

Lagos court acquits Four of attempted robbery

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of an Ikeja High Court on Wednesday acquitted four men of a three-count charge of conspiracy, attempted armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

The men are Raman Salawudeen, Ayo Olapada, Franklin Akpobuwa and Sese Demilade.

Justice Ipaye said: "The prosecution has failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubts; the defendants are hereby discharged and acquitted.

"You have been given a second chance, go and look for gainful employment.

"It is better to be road sweepers than be involved in nefarious activities. I do not want to see you in my court again."

Ipaye said the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubts.

"I find no evidence pointing to conspiracy; it was only the first defendant that was identified at the bus stop.

"On the attempted robbery charge, the totality of the evidence was that the last overt act was crossing the road.

``There was no evidence that the defendant threatened or took calculated steps to rob Sylvester Okor.

``On illegal possession of firearms in a public place as contained in Section 296 (3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, a person's residence cannot be seen as a public place.

``There is no shred of evidence that Sese was found in possession of a firearm in a public place," she ruled.

Ealier, the prosecution led by Mr Akin George, had alleged that the defendants attempted to rob a man, Sylvester Okor, on June 16, 2013 at Peace Estate, Market Bus Stop, Badagry in Lagos State.

The prosecution claimed that the defendants were walking behind Okor at a petrol station when a vigilance group in the neighbourhood alerted him of their presence and they fled.

"The defendants ran immediately Okor was alerted and the vigilantes gave them a hot chase and Akpobuwa, the first defendant, slipped and was caught while the other accomplices escaped.

"He was caught in front of the petrol station and a handkerchief and two live cartridges were found in his possession."

George said a locally made pistol was found in the home of Sese, one of the defendants, adding that the neighbourhood had been experiencing robberies which led to the setting up of the vigilance group.

Nigeria rated high with global albinism- Foundation

The Albino Foundation (TAF), an NGO, says Nigeria has been rated one of the countries with the highest albinism prevalence in the world.
Mr Jake Epelle, President of the foundation, said this in an interview with newsmen  on Wednesday in Abuja.
Ekpelle quoted various research reports and publications to buttress his claim.
According to him, people living with Albinism are estimated to be 2 million in Nigeria with children constituting about 40 percent of the figure.
He said children with albinism were also among the most vulnerable in Nigeria, noting that most albinos are susceptible to skin cancer due to the exposure of their delicate skin type to the sun.
The president of the foundation said the absence of social welfare services in Nigeria had made livelihood difficult for children with special needs such as people with albinism.
``There is no official frame work to provide social welfare services, education and health support for the children.
``Many of them are not in school, not because of their mental disability but because of visual impairment, discrimination and social exclusion due to their skin colour.
``Parents however are solely responsible for their children’s care and support,’’ Ekpelle said.
He said due to lack of social welfare policy in the country, school teachers have been left to decide on the nature and quality of care to provide for children with albinism. Epelle said the foundation had launched TAF Back to School Education Grant Project focused on supporting indigent children living with albinism in primary and secondary schools across the country.

``In the month of March, we partnered with Total E and P Nigeria staff multipurpose cooperative to enrol 100 indigent Albino children in primary and secondary schools across the country.

``This project is aimed at ensuring school dropout return to school, children who had never been in school are enrolled, and supporting those already in school,’’ he said.
Epelle said the success of the education initiative was making history in its support for albinos in achieving their educational pursuit.

He called on the Federal Government to adopt a social welfare policy that would cater for the needs of indigent children living with albinism in the country.

``We want to see government intervention programmes, through specific policy direction and action plan aimed at alleviating the sufferings, neglect, stigmatisation and discrimination faced by persons with albinism,’’ Epelle said.

Turkish prime minister rules out Islamic constitution

Turkish Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, has on Wednesday cleared the ongoing controversy in Istanbul that Turkey is not planning to introduce an Islamic constitution.

He said while speaking before the parliament that the clearance was because of a call for an Islamic constitution from Parliament Speaker, Ismail Kahraman.

Davutoglu said the speaker insisted that Turkey should be defined as an Islamic nation and have a new religious-based constitution that does not contain the principle of secularism.

The prime minister said Turkey is currently debating changes to its constitution meant to empower the office of the president, currently held by Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Davutoglu said secularism would be "part of the new constitution which would secure citizens' freedom of religion and faith.
Secularism has been a defining characteristic of modern Turkey, founded in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The concept is mentioned repeatedly in the constitution, which was created in 1980 following a military coup.

He explained that the constitution would also guarantee that "the state maintains the same distance to all religious groups.

Meanwhile, Erdogan has distanced himself from the remarks, which he described as Kahraman's "personal opinion."

Arresting Jonathan will throw Nigeria into confusion- Northern CAN warns Buhari

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern Chapter, has released a statement asking President Buhari to shelve any plans of arresting former President Goodluck Jonathan as he continues in his fight against corruption. In a statement signed by the association's Publicity Secretary, Rev. Joseph Hayab, the christian body stated that such moves by the Buhari-led government will throw Nigeria into confusion.

“Let me warn that such a misadventure will set a wrong precedent and only open door for mischief people to set this nation into confusion. What Nigerians need urgently is availability of fuel, electricity, prompt salary, security of lives and property, among other issues that are begging for urgent answers. If the purported plan to arrest him is to please the international community and prove to them that we are fighting corruption, then let us know that this same international community are busy celebrating him as hero of democracy and even those who seriously wanted him to go for a change to happen are now singing a new song about him. Former President, Jonathan is deservedly seen in Nigeria and beyond as a hero of democracy because of his actions before, during and after the 2015 elections. As such, it will be an ill advice for the Buhari administration to initiate the arrest of such a statesman at this time and with the current realities. Our government must know that there are individuals serving today that are also been accused of corruption but since there are claims that nothing has been established against them, they are walking and speaking like saints. While ignoring all these, Government now wants to arrest a man of peace like Jonathan? CAN Northern States wishes to advice that such an action, if actualized, has the capacity to lead to serious confusion that will affect Nigeria economically and otherwise. We believe Former President Jonathan deserves praise and should receive gratitude from those in power today not scorn. Let it not be that this purported planned arrest is meant to distract Nigerians from speaking or complaining about the reality of what and how they are feeling since the past eleven months, we are afraid that such an action may spark a chain of reactions. If our President wants to arrest anything for now then he should arrest the incessant spate of herdsmen attacks in Nigeria which has led to the deaths of almost a thousand of innocent Nigerians under his watch. He should arrest the dangerous slide in the power sector.he should arrest the slide in the economy. We believe at this time and with the current realities that our former president most not be denigrate but honour, because honour must be given to whom it is due.

3,000-year-old coffins discovered in central China

Three sets of coffins, believed to have been buried 3,000 years ago, were discovered in central China's Henan Province.

Local archaeologists said on Tuesday in Zhengzhou (China) that following a preliminary excavation, they retrieved the three sets of inner and outer coffins made of cypress wood from the tombs, as well as a single coffin.

``In ancient times, Chinese people used an outer coffin to protect the inner coffin.’’

They said the coffins have been taken to a museum in Anyang City.

They explained that in March, a villager in Anshang's Neihuang County discovered ancient tombs while digging in a brick kiln.

``He uncovered bronze items as well as human and animal bones 10 metres deep underground.’’

Kong Deming, Head of the Museum, expressed dismay, stressing that it is rare to see such well-preserved coffins from the Shang Dynasty.

``It is a family burial place, and the owners were affluent people, possibly aristocrats,’’ he said.

He noted that the discovery might help archaeologists learn more about Shang Dynasty burial customs and understand cultural development.

Deming said the excavation could also be helpful in geological studies since the coffins were buried so deep.

He explained that the Shang Dynasty capital was once in Shangqiu, Henan and later moved to Anyang, where ruins of the old city were discovered in the early 1900s in one of China's oldest and largest archaeological sites.

At least 20 Al-Shabaab militants killed in heavy fighting in Somalia

No fewer than 20 Al-Shabaab militants were killed on Tuesday in a heavy fighting between Somali

National Army and the militant group at a military base near Baidoa town in Bay region.

Somali National Army (SNA) Commander in Division 60 based in Bay region, Ismail Shire, told newsmen that 20 Al-Shabaab militants attempted to attack their base there were killed during the battle.

``Al-Shabaab militants attacked our army base at Daynunay near Baidoa town in Bay region this morning, the SNA overpowered and shot dead 20 of them on the spot,’’ Shire said.

He declined to say if there were casualties on their sides.

However, Al-Shabaab militants claimed victory in the attack in which the insurgents claimed to have taken over the army base.

The group said that it captured the SNA base of Daynunay and killed 10 government soldiers.

Baidoa town is the administrative capital of Southwest state in Somalia.

The latest incident came after security forces killed no fewer than six Al-Shabaab militants and captured three others in Bur-hakabo town in Bay region this week.

According to government officials, earlier this week six of the militants blew up themselves.

The militants have recently increased their attacks against AU and Somali forces in the Lower Shabelle region, which has seen a surge of attacks that resulted in the loss of several strategic towns although the militants mainly held those towns briefly.

The AMISOM forces have also increased airstrikes in southern Somalia in the recent past, resolving in the killing of more than 50 militants late March.

Nigerian Navy hands over 300 bags of seized rice to Customs

The Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base, Badagry, on Tuesday handed over 300 bags of rice seized along the coastline from smugglers, to the Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Command.

The Commandant of the Nigerian Naval Base in Badagry, Navy Capt. Simon Dogo, said that the seizures were made along the coast at Tongeji Island in Badagry.

Dogo said that the seizures were made as a result of intelligence gathering and tip-off by the officers.

``Over the weekend, the officials of the Navy seized 300 bags of rice from smugglers at the Tongeji Island.

``The seizures were made possible through intelligence gathering and a tip-off the officials got, the commandant said.

``The moment we got the information, we laid ambush for them on both ways and they easily fell into our hands and no casualty was recorded, ‘’ the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quotes the commandant as saying.

He said, ``The smugglers tried to bribe the officials who made the interception but they resisted because we are determined to eradicate all that would affect the economy of the country.’’

``Due to the synergy that exists between the Customs and the Navy, we have handed over the seized items so that the Customs can carry out further investigation,’’ Dogo said.

The Controller of NCS, Seme Command, Comptroller Victor Dimka, commended the efforts of the Navy and promised to maintain the synergy between both agencies.

Dimka said that the suspects and the seized items would be handed over to the Marine Unit of Customs, whose primary responsibility ``is mainly to combat smuggling along the waterways’’.

The controller, however, warned smugglers to desist from smuggling or face the full wrath of the law when caught.
